Industry requirements regarding semantic services are manifold. The requirements of ASG vary between the industry area and the application area and we have chosen a strategy where we have targeted a specific set of services; location based services for mobile users.
First, it should be noted that mobile user is a good candidate to use this kind of services, since he does not have the capabilities of a desktop user (bandwidth, uninterrupted connection, cheap data transfer, both hands free to use a full size keyboard) to browse the internet for suitable information. This is why an interface is needed to (a) find the information in a more suitable way and (b) deliver the service appropriately.
Such mobile users are often the customer of vehicle manufacturers and much experience about mobile and location based services has been gained during the last years in the automotive industry. Some of these experiences are shown in the slides "Service Experiences" in the presentation Requirements from Industry*. This slide set also gives an idea about how services are judged from this industry regarding possible use ("(Non-) Working Services").
The future service world should be distinguished by easy interfaces, interchangeable service components (services fit everywhere) and services provided by everyone. An approach to satisfy the requirements is to use semantic mechanisms to specify the needed information. Some reasons why services have failed so far are sketched in the slides.
